The Importance of Church Membership

Church membership, does it matter?  We believe that church membership is an essential component of establishing, building and sustaining a true gospel community
within God’s universal church.

In a world filled with a consumer driven mindset, God calls you to become a provider for others as He imparts and entrusts the gospel to you.  Believers should aim to be a part of church membership because it brings encouragement to stronger and weaker Christians alike. If the church is truly a body as the apostle Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 12:12, then every part is integral and doing the work of the ministry, which chief aim is to carry out the great commission by seeking and saving the lost and building disciples.

Although the Bible does not tell us to have a formalized membership, the concept of church membership is everywhere in scripture and therefore implied.  Church membership is biblical.  Paul instructs Titus to appoint elders in every city (Ch. 1) to lead, feed and protect those among them.  In Phil 1:1 he writes to the elders and deacons among the believers in Philippi. In 1 Peter 5 there is a charge to the elders to shepherd the flock of God that The Lord has given them charge of.  These are implications and examples of a local community participating in the work of the gospel. At Lifehouse, we seek to carry out the same idea that has not just biblical precedence, but a historical and practical importance as well. We are called as Christians to live in community and to have mutual accountability. Simply put, we need each other to grow into everything that God desires for us. God’s ultimate idea is to do this through a local church.
